The Northern California Forum for Professional Development was an incredible experience. Remember, the purpose is to engage and reflect with colleagues about innovative, evidence-based and effective approaches to adult learning while connecting diverse providers of professional learning. We started and ended the weekend with a powerful and fun keynote followed by a collaborative panel of leaders in early childhood education.

We learned new science about child development, pedagogy and adult learning. We practiced communication and coaching skills. We received updates about systems initiatives. We exchanged ideas and inspiration at two evening receptions. Our in-depth discussions led to some powerful insights and a call to action. I learned that developing the workforce starts with developing shared competencies for permits and professional pathways that include aligning higher education to ongoing professional learning. I was reminded that the building of a system cannot be separated from the political context and that we need to advocate through comprehensive partnerships.

The Forum is a model for creating a space to build those cross-sector relationships. I look forward to the collaboration that may arise out of the Southern California Forum for Professional Development in Palm Springs.
