Supporting Members Through Meaningful Professional Learning

More than 50 early childhood educators gathered for a dynamic professional learning event hosted by the San Diego-Imperial Chapter, demonstrating the Chapter’s strong commitment to supporting its members through high-quality training opportunities. The day began with the morning keynote, “STEAM is All Around Us,” presented by Ed Sudario, CAAEYC Vice President and Membership Chair, setting the tone for a day focused on curiosity, innovation and intentional teaching.

The keynote highlighted how science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics are naturally embedded in the everyday experiences of young children. Participants explored practical strategies for recognizing and leveraging teachable moments—through play, observation, problem-solving, and creative expression—to foster deeper learning in their programs.

A key message of the session was that effective STEAM integration does not require specialized materials, but rather a shift in mindset. By seeing the learning potential in everyday interactions—from block play to exploring patterns in nature—educators can create rich, engaging experiences that support children’s development.

Throughout the event, attendees actively engaged in discussion and reflection, sharing practices and learning from one another. This collaborative environment reflects the strength of CAAEYC’s membership community—where educators are supported not only through content, but through connection and shared expertise.

Training days like this are a direct example of how local chapters support their members—by providing accessible, relevant professional development that strengthens practice and builds community. Through these opportunities, CAAEYC ensures members remain informed, inspired, and connected to a network of professionals committed to high-quality early learning.
