In Memoriam – Viretta “Vi” Edwards

Viretta "VI" Edwards, dear friend and mentor to Contra Costa AEYC passed on July 26. Vi was founding President of Contra Costa Association for the Education of Young Children Affiliate (1996- 98) and served on the Board for many years. Besides being a valued advisor, she mentored board members until 2012.

Vi started out in East Bay AEYC. Close friend Mae Lee Kelley said, Vi participated in many Western States Leadership Network meetings. Even after splitting off from East Bay AEYC where Vi had served as President from 1982-84 and in other offices through the years, she served on East Bay AEYC conference committees, was President of Pacific Gateway Section (Region), and served at the state level. She was a presenter at National, State, and local AEYC conferences. As a believer in continuing education she never stopped learning. She also helped many students achieve their education goals.

Vi was dedicated to helping this world be a better place for families, children and colleagues always with a sense of humor and fun. Sharon Krinard wrote this little tribute to her friend called "Flea Market Mama:"

Planning and scanning for the hunt,
Gave Viretta so much pleasure
After all, one person's junk is another one's treasure
Widgets and gadgets make great little gifts,
Just add them to your collections
And if you can't find an immediate use,
Stuff the lot in totes got from conventions.

Between Vi and her husband Ed they raised 11 children and stayed close as their family grew to include grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be remembered for her tireless service in building our local professional organization in Contra Costa County—and for her smile and cheerful optimism.
