Good News for Family Child Care Providers

“Creating quality jobs for the child care workforce makes economic and common sense. These workers care for our kids – we need to take care of them,” California’s Governor Newsom said in a statement.

  • A big applause for SB 234, signed by the Governor of California on September 5, 2019, which will become a law on January 1, 2020 – “Keeping the Kids Close to Home Act.”

There is an extreme shortage of licensed family child care homes in California and the number is decreasing since 2008 because of city requirements and landlord or home association requirements! Parents and families prefer and need child care near their homes that allows them to work or study and to ensure their children succeed. Family child care homes are very much in the community, serving the community by opening their homes and hearts – providing a home away from home to young children.

Pursuant to SB 234 bill, cities and counties cannot require licensed small and large family child care homes to – a) get a zoning permit or b) get a business license. But the family child care homes still need to abide by the state child care licensing and state fire requirements.

  • The Governor also signed another bill (on September 30, 2019) AB 378, Childcare: family child care providers: bargaining representative; which authorizes family child care providers to form, join, and participate in a union. This unites more than 40,000 family child care providers across California to collectively bargain like other public employees regarding reimbursement rates and payment procedures; a labor contract.
