Assistant Director

The Oaks Parent-Child Workshop - Santa Barbara, CA

We are seeking an innovative, compassionate, dedicated assistant director to join our staff. Our morning staff includes the director and assistant director, the Afternoon Program staff includes a lead teacher and a teacher.  There is some overlap with the two teams. Responsibilities include:

  • Provide oversight for the morning program under the direction of the director, including building child-centered, play-based curriculum based on the emergent curriculum model.
  • Confidently communicate with parents.
  • Model positive guidance strategies and conflict resolution practices with children.
  • Work with the director and participating parents to keep the school environment safe, clean and attractive.
  • Attend evening classes and other school functions.
  • Work with the Director to support the Afternoon Program.
  • Be qualified to substitute for the director, in her absence.


Current knowledge of child development tenets and familiarity with developmentally appropriate practice are essential requirements of the position.  We encourage and support continuing education.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Child Development Program Director Permit/Child Development Site Supervisor Permit.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Human Development, Family & Consumer Studies with a specialization in Child Development or Early Childhood Education, Education Psychology with a specialization in Child Development, Elementary Education, Psychology or Family Life Studies.
  • 2 years or more full-time teaching experience in an Early Childhood Program or parent education.
  • The following CCL requirements must be satisfied, prior to employment:
    • TB test clearance and up-to-date immunizations
    • Current Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR Certificate
    • Criminal background clearance

Preferred Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Experience participating in a cooperative workshop environment.
  • Experience with Early Childhood Nature-Based Education/Environmental Education.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
