Bunker Hill Parent Participation Nursery School - San Mateo, CA

The Director fulfills our mission to guide children in their social, emotional, physical, and intellectual health while also helping members gain a greater understanding and appreciation of their child’s development through participation. They provide instructional leadership for the school and serve as advisor to the Board of Directors and as supervisor for the staff. The Director also functions as the Board’s liaison to the church and CCPPNS council nursery schools. 

 

  1. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess qualifications for Child Development Site Supervisor Permit or Child Development Program Director Permit from the State of California Commission on Teaching Credentialing

  • Certificate of 15 hours Health and Safety Training
  • Mandated Reporter Certificate

 

  1. PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

 

  • Experience in a co-op managing working parents as co-teachers

  • Extensive knowledge about childhood development, play-based education, and emergent curriculum

  • Master's degree or equivalent experience in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, or other related field

  • Familiarity with NAEYC accreditation

  • Is currently certified in first aid and CPR

 

  1. INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP & MODELING THE SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY

 

  • Acts in accordance with the goals and philosophy of the San Mateo Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools, the California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

  • Upholds the philosophy of Bunker Hill as a cooperative nursery school and as a parent-child center by providing the appropriate environment, materials, and information to enable and encourage parents and children to learn and develop together

  • Promotes the concept of cooperative participation as an integral part of the maintenance and improvement and growth of Bunker Hill Parent Participation Nursery School

  • Pursues personal and professional growth in order to model “growth as a life-long process” to membership

 

  1. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Advisor to the Bunker Hill Board of Directors

  • Provides guidance to the Board on managing a volunteer organization

  • Models and promotes an ethos of mutual respect among the members, offering experience and expertise to guide Board in making appropriate school-related decisions

  • Shares information to maintain continuity and consistency for the program and policies of the school from year to year

  • Consults with Board Presidents prior to each Board and Membership meeting

  • Assists in planning Membership meeting topics and securing guest speakers

  • Serves on the Hiring Committee

 

  1. School and community meetings

    • Attends all monthly Membership and Board Meetings

    • Attends San Mateo Council Meeting, as applicable

    • Attends all major school and fundraising events, including:

      1. Orientation

      2. Open House

      3. All-School Picnic (beginning and end of year)

 

  1. Personnel management/supervision

    • Is professional, energetic, and a natural leader with excellent written and oral communication skills

    • Manages and supervises all school staff including teachers

    • Provides mentorship and resources in areas of curriculum, professional growth, child assessment, and communication with parents

    • Ensures open communication between Board of Directors and teachers for supervision of staff

    • Plans and facilitates monthly staff meeting and coordinates curriculum across classes

    • Maintains personnel files for all teachers including documentation for California State Licensing  and national Association for the education of the young children (NAEYC) accreditation

    • Performs evaluations of each teacher and assists teachers in development of individual professional development plans

    • Establishes a substitute teacher list consisting of qualified members, alumni, or trained individuals.

 

  1. Administrative Duties

    • Maintains files on-site including contracts with the landlord, insurance, documentation, board minutes, registration forms, BY-laws, licensing information, correspondence, and other business of the school

    • Manages NAEYC Accreditation process, including annual reports and reaccreditation

    • Manages inventory, purchase, organization and upkeep of curriculum and other supplies and equipment. Works within budget to determine appropriate purchases for the school

    • Manages mail, answering correspondence and filling out surveys and forms required for business of the school

    • Manages California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing annual renewal and keeps the school up to date on all licensing requirements

    • Is currently certified in first Aid and CPR

    • Updates school documents such as By-laws, parent handbook, board policies, personnel policies, etc

    • Works with Board to set annual school calendar

    • Supervises facility for safety including maintaining First Aid kits, emergency supplies, emergency information on all enrolled children

 

  1. Instructional Leadership and Public relations

    • Represents Bunker Hill in the Community. Actively networks with other directors and early childhood education programs. Attends preschool nights in the community representing Bunker Hill

    • Keeps up to date in the areas of Administration and Early Childhood Education by attending relevant workshops and/or conferences

 

  1. Budget and Finance

  • Serves on the Financial Aid Committee. Is liaison to Head Start Auxiliary for financial assistance to families.

  • Serves on the Finance Committee and advises the Board on long and short-term health of budget, working closely with Treasurer and Secretary

  • Reviews teacher/director contracts with Board President

  • Sets summer school budget, manages summer program and staff

 

  1. TEACHING

  1. In the classroom

    • Is comfortable directing parents as co-teachers while also creating structure and routine for children in the outdoor classroom

    • Creates and nurtures an open, creative, and positive learning environment for parents and children

    • Is able to teach and respond to a diverse collection of ideas, cultures, and attitudes so that he/she may provide an open and non-judgemental learning environment.

    • Plans and facilitates the daily learning program of the class, and posts plans as needed

    • Provides general supervision of school during class hours

    • Able to clearly define conflict resolution plans for in the classroom

    • Keeps a record of the daily attendance of pupils, parents, and visitors in accordance with state licensing regulations

    • Notifies Board of no shows and non participation on member teaching days

    • Keeps a record and reports to family/board any injuries during class 

 

  1. Outside the classroom

    • Makes recommendations for new equipment and supplies relevant to the emergent curriculum

    • Works collaboratively with the board, parents, and other staff 

    •  Works with the board to arrange for a substitute teacher in the event of illness

    •  Attends monthly staff meetings, and is available as a resource and support for colleagues

    •  Attends all monthly membership meetings

    •  Communicates regularly with parents by konstella or email

    •   Represents and promotes Bunker Hill Parent Participation Nursery School in the community

 

  1. Covid Protocols

    • Observes entry health checks with each child and participating parent prior to the start of school day

    • Encourages both mask-wearing and physical distancing at all times between children, parent workers, and teacher

    • With the help of family job holders, sanitizes and disinfects toys, supplies, etc. used after each class session

Bunker Hill began with a group of families who wanted their children to learn in a nurturing, play-filled environment. Bunker Hill is a parent participation nursery school for ages 2 yrs. - entrance into 1st grade located in San Mateo, CA. For the duration of the pandemic, classes are held exclusively outside in our outdoor classroom with covid precautions in place. As a co-operative preschool, parents are actively involved with the daily class activities of children, the creation and implementation of the school philosophy and rules, the financial and operational functions of the school through board membership, and gain the rewards of watching their children grow as well as learn from the knowledge of the teachers and fellow participating parents on their teaching days.
