Job Description: Sierra Madre Community Nursery School (SMCNS) is seeking a Director of Education for our nonprofit Parent Participation preschool program with annual enrollment of 160 students. The Director of Education creates long and short-term goals for the program, works collaboratively as an administrator in overseeing the school’s daily activities, and leads the community of families in upholding the vision and mission of the school.

We believe young children have the best opportunity to flourish when parents and professional educators work together to support their physical, intellectual, social and emotional evolution. Our intention is to mentor parents as teachers and caregivers who will continue to foster their child’s development and education long after they leave the supportive community of our nursery school. 


Essential Functions

  1.  Pedagogy:

    • Support and guide teachers in classroom program planning, implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the school’s philosophy, appropriate practices for child development, NAEYC Accreditation standards, and state licensing regulations.

    • Collaboratively develop parent education programming to support a learning community of children and adults that promotes optimal child development and healthy families. Current parent education programming includes daily Parent Helper meetings, monthly Parent Teacher meetings, and parent education workshops throughout the school year. 

    • Develop opportunities for staff for continuing education and professional development. 

  2. Organizational Development & Systems:

    • Work with the Director of Operations (DO) and Board of Trustees to create an annual budget for Educational Curriculum, Marketing and Professional Development. Skills in budgeting, cash flow management, grant writing and fundraising are useful.

    • Maintain or improve current enrollment as needed, guide child placement, manage waitlist and admissions processes, and coordinate/host school tours.

    • Counsel, schedule, and train parents and teachers in accordance with school policies.

    • Supervise the planning of the physical classroom environment, including the selection of play equipment, to consistently maintain appropriate standards.

    • Evaluate program effectiveness and define organizational problems; gather data to generate alternative solutions and present to the Board for approval.


  1. Human Resources:

    • Work with DO to recruit, select, and orient personnel, according to established hiring procedures. 

    • Maintain and/or modify systems for supervision, retention, and professional development of staff that affirm program values and promote a shared vision.

    • Motivate staff by demonstrating skilled leadership, inspirational goal setting, and the expectation of high levels of performance. Moderate routine daily group staff meetings and monthly in-service staff meetings.


  1. Collaboration:

    • Establish partnerships with program staff, families, board members, community representatives, civic leaders, CCPPNS and other stakeholders to design and improve services for children and their families.

    • Consult and communicate effectively with the Board of Trustees that oversees the Director.

    • Work with DO to identify, facilitate and solve problems with staff, teachers, and parents when necessary.


  1. Advocacy:

    • Advise the board on effective marketing, public relations and community outreach programs to ensure the school maintains a positive public image, and implement approved community outreach efforts.



  • BA or BS degree with at least 9 credit-bearing hours of coursework in administration, leadership or management AND at least 24 credit-bearing hours of coursework in Early Childhood Education, child development, elementary education or early childhood special education that addresses child development and learning from birth through kindergarten, OR actively working to complete coursework.

  • Minimum 3 years Early Childhood Education teaching experience with competency in a leadership role.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills.


Compensation and benefits will be competitive within the market of regional preschools and will be commensurate with years of experience.
