Hiring Requirements: In order to be employed at the Oaks Parent-Child Workshop (the Oaks) as a Co-Director, the candidate must first be hired as a noncredit Parent Education instructor by Santa Barbara City College - School of Extended Learning (SBCC-SEL).

Salary: The salary of the Parent Education Instructor component of this position is contingent upon education and experience and is to be determined by the SBCC-SEL (Please refer to Salary Table 11). Additionally, the Oaks will offer a salary for the Co-Director component of this position at a range of $25,000 - $35,000, depending on education and experience. The Oaks will also offer a health stipend of $3,000.

Working Hours: The Adjunct Instructor will be paid to teach three 5-hour labs per week by SBCC-SEL, for a 35-week year. Additional working hours will be paid by the Oaks, including two 5-hour labs per week for a 35-week year, and additional hours for Oaks events, set-up days, etc.

Program Overview

The Oaks Parent-Child Workshop is a cooperative preschool, providing parent education, an inclusive and nurturing community, and a play-based learning environment for children 2 1⁄2 to 5 years of age. We are a parent education program affiliated with SBCC. For Fall 2020, our evening lectures will be provided on-line and the morning labs will be provided face-to-face and outdoors only. We will utilize the outdoor spaces at The Oaks as well as other outdoor locations in the Santa Barbara area.

Position Overview

There are two noncredit Parent Education instructors of SBCC-SEL who are also Executive Director and Co-Director of the Oaks; collaboration between the two individuals will be essential.

SBCC-SEL responsibilities include:

  • ●  Teaching lab classes in the morning, including planning and providing child-centered, play-based curriculum

    based on the approved course outline.

  • ●  Modeling positive guidance strategies and conflict resolution practices with children and parents.

    The Oaks responsibilities include:

  • ●  Assisting with some administrative duties, including coordination with parent board of directors, staff and

    child file management, completion of essential forms and scheduling and planning meetings and events.

  • ●  Maintaining current knowledge of child development tenets and familiarity with developmentally appropriate

    practices.

  • ●  Being a lifelong learner willing to pursue on-going professional development.

  • ●  Collaborating with the Executive Director/ Parent Education instructor on the SBCC weekly evening lectures.

  • ●  Offering a curriculum rich in nature-based learning opportunities.

  • ●  Working with the Executive Director/ Parent Education instructor and parents to keep the school environment

    safe, clean and inviting.

    Minimum Qualifications/ Requirements:

Must meet minimum requirements for noncredit Parent Education Instructor at SBCC-SEL, including:
o Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Human Development, Family & Consumer Studies with a specialization in Child Development or Early Childhood Education, Education Psychology with a specialization in Child Development, Elementary Education, Psychology or Family Life Studies.
o Two years or more full-time teaching experience in an early childhood program or parent education program.

Department of Social Services - Community Care Licensing requirements must also be satisfied prior to employment, including:

o Child Development Program Director Permit or Child Development Site Supervisor Permit o TB test clearance and up-to-date immunizations
o Current Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR Certificate
o Criminal background clearance

Additional requirements of the Oaks:
o Experience with early childhood nature-based education/environmental education or garden/farm education.
o Naturalist skills and knowledge: comfort working outdoors with children and modeling curiosity and wonder about the natural world.

Preferred Qualifications/Requirements:

Bilingual in English  and Spanish
Experience participating in a cooperative workshop environment
